How to find house blueprints online? ›

One option for how to get a blueprint of your house is to search online public record systems, like the Nationwide Environmental Title Research. If your community has an online archive system, you may also be able to request access to your blueprint there.

Detailed Floor Plan

The home's exterior footprint, openings and interior rooms are carefully dimensioned. Important features are noted including built-ins, niches and appliances. All doors and windows are identified. Typically this section also includes the square footage information.

Local Building Department/Archives

Inquire about Blueprint Availability: Contact the local building department or archives. Inquire about the existence and availability of blueprints for your specific property. They may have detailed plans of your home, especially if it underwent significant construction or renovation.

While you may still need the help of a professional architect to successfully draft blueprints for a complicated building project, you can make your own blueprints to design a simple project. You can use tracing paper and an architect's ruler to draw them by hand yourself or use a computer program to make your design.

The county clerk, county recorder, or land registrar may maintain copies of building blueprints. If so, you may need to fill out paperwork and pay a fee for administrative and copying costs. Depending on your municipality, you may also find a copy of the blueprints online.

The best way is to go outside and measure the length and width of your house and multiply those figures together. If you cannot measure outside, measure inside and add the thickness of the walls. You can measure either in feet or metres. An integral garage would be included in this calculation.
